[Announcement] Deprecation of Kitsune chatrooms

The chatrooms of the Kitsune Project are now
officially deprecated.
Discord is deleted and Matrix is locked.
The rooms were already pretty low-traffic, no real conversations were happening which is mainly due to the glacial pace of development (apologies, I guess, but I have a lot on my mind and less time than before).
The bridges constantly broke. Granted, I could have set up a better solution but that would have been an additional burden. Burden for basically zero payoff.
Matrix sucks.
Matrix as a protocol sucks. Matrix sucks UI wise. Matrix as a project sucks. It’s just not very good and I usually only use it nowadays when I absolutely have to (looking at you, CCC, and your Matrix rooms for events..).
The UX is horrendous. Synchronization issues, ordering issues, encryption issues, etc etc.
It’s so bad that in my hackerspace..
HACKERSPACE mind you, we know our broken computers
..the phrase “lol matrix” has become so common place, there’s rarely a day where someone opens up Element to check on messages that this phrase isn’t dropped because something spontaneously broke in a hilarious way.
The Matrix Project sucks up funds from the EU and other institutions intended for FOSS development, and then turns around and announces shit like Synapse Pro.
Oh, and they continously suck up to “defense” contractors, police, and governments. Because of course they do.
Not to mention that the Matrix community is a horrible place.
Discord sucks.
Discord is a centralized corporate for-profit company that tries to aggressively monetize their user-base. They haven’t hit the summit of Mount Garbage yet but are very well on the way there.
But the messages are all stored in US judistriction in plaintext in the hands of a startup that attempts to desperately become profitable.. on cloud infrastructure by one of the biggest advertising firms in the world (Discord runs on Google Cloud).
Not to mention that all of their software is closed-source and that they are hostile towards third-party clients and modifications.
I mean, I get it from their side. Can’t spy on users through their clients if you don’t control their clients..
So what’s the alternative?
For now I enabled the “Discussions” tab on the GitHub repository. I guess it’s a good enough time as any to try it out.
This is not a permanent solution however because I don’t like GitHub either. But that deserves its own post.
I’ve been toying with the idea of moving to Forgejo for like 1-2 years now.
We also have a section on the ActivityPub SocialHub.. I mean I haven’t checked into that forum in like 1 year or so. I know, blasphemy to admit that as an Fediverse dev.
There just isn’t a good platform at this point, at least in my opinion.
The world sucks. All Computers Are Broken.
